  • Garlic and onions: Sauté them in oil before adding the meat; these aromatics add amazing flavor!
  • Meat: Ground beef is my preferred option, but Italian sausage also works quite well.
  • Spices: Oregano, black pepper, Kosher or table salt, and Italian seasoning add a ton of flavor and go great with marinara sauce.
  • Tomato sauce: One jar of marinara or spaghetti sauce is used in this simple spaghetti recipe (I adore Prego spaghetti sauce), but if you’d rather, you can make your own at home.
  • Diced tomatoes: This is completely optional, but I like the texture they add to the sauce, giving it a bit more heartiness.
  • Spaghetti: You can use any shape of noodle, but this long one works best for soaking up the sauce.

  • Brown the meat. Heat olive oil in a frying pan. Add onions and cook until translucent. Stir in garlic and cook 1 more minute. Add the meat and seasonings after that, and cook until the beef is browned.
  • Simmer. Stir in marinara sauce and tomatoes and let simmer uncovered.
  • Cook noodles. As the sauce simmers, prepare the spaghetti noodles per the package’s instructions.
  • Serve the meat sauce over the cooked pasta and garnish with parmesan cheese and fresh basil, if you’d like.

TIP: Before simmering, stir in 1/2 cup of pasta water for a thinner sauce.

  • Veggies. When the onion is sautéed, add veggies like bell peppers, carrots, and mushrooms.
  • Meat. Replace the ground beef with ground turkey or Italian sausage.
  • Cheese. Try topping it with fresh mozzarella for a real treat.
  • Herbs. Fresh basil or oregano work really well in this recipe.
