There are a few quick fixes you can attempt if you truly don’t want to cook frozen meat until it’s tender without first thawing it. The simplest is to immerse the meat in a cold bowl of water while it’s still in the bag. Change it out every 30 min. or so until the meat has softened inside.

Once more, I prepared this in my Instant Pot; I will modify the instructions to fit a crock or an oven.

Round Steak & Gravy is a recipe that uses an affordable cut of beef called Round Steak that is delicious, but typically needs hours to cook so that it is tender. I made this recipe in my Instant Pot, but it can also be made in the slow cooker or in your oven, if you have the time. I will add the times for cooking in the crock or oven at the end of the recipe.

Round steak is usually sold sliced. Slices of the round roast’s bottom, top, or eye are used. I can get it at almost any store, including Walmart and Aldi. You can ask at any meat department.

This recipe will feed a family of four. You don’t need to change the onion or gravy when you double the meat. The following ingredients are needed to make this recipe:

Using the instant pot to make a straightforward, traditional recipe more contemporary rather than letting it cook slowly in the oven or crock pot Delicious served with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.

  • Ingredients
  • 4 to 6 slices of Round Steak
  • 2 Pouches of Onion Gravy
  • 2 C of Hot Water
  • 1 Medium Yellow Onion, Sliced
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic, Peeled and Smashed
  • 2 T of Butter


  1. Sear your round steak on both sides using a skillet with one tablespoon of butter. I cooked these for just two or three minutes on each side.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to your Instant Pot and sauté the onions and garlic.
  3. Add the slices of meat to the pot.
  4. In two cups of hot water, add the two gravy pouches and dissolve.
  5. Pour over the meat and onions.
  6. For 20 minutes, cook on high pressure in your Instant Pot with the meat setting selected.
  7. Release the steam and you are ready to serve.

You are welcome to use another beef seasoning blend or Montreal steak seasoning on the steak. Alternatively, simply mix in a dash of garlic powder with the salt and pepper. A top round steak is lean, flavorful, and budget-friendly. It’s a great option for marinades and tastes best when cooked to 145 degrees Fahrenheit, or medium-rare. This is an excellent steak to grill, but if the weather isn’t suitable for grilling, broiling it will produce a similar result. Meat that is broiling is exposed to intense heat from all sides, and our oven probably has a broiler setting specifically for that purpose.
