Things to know before starting a clear liquid diet

Make sure to stay away from red or purple colored clear liquids if you are advised to follow a clear liquid diet before a colonoscopy. These can interfere with test imaging. Your doctor will let you know if this is necessary.

Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes. It’s critical to closely monitor your blood sugar levels and return to solid foods as soon as possible.

Your objective when following a clear liquid diet is to stay hydrated while consuming enough vitamins and minerals to support your body’s essential processes. Additionally, this diet aims to maintain the stomach and intestines relaxed.

Clear Liquids to Try

You are not limited to drinking only water and clear broth prior to a colonoscopy, even though a clear liquid diet restricts what you can eat. Harvard Health Publishing lists the following additional drinks and snacks that are suitable for a colonoscopy:

  • Pulp-free juice like white grape or apple juice
  • Electrolyte sports drinks
  • Clear sodas like ginger ale
  • Tea or coffee (without milk or cream)
  • Ice pops or fruit ice
  • Clear hard candy like lemon drops
  • Fruit-flavored gelatin or Jell-O
  • Clear soups and broths, such as bouillon, beef, and chicken broth, or vegetable broth
  • According to UVA Health, clear nutrition or protein drinks like Ensure Clear

A normal day’s eating on a clear liquid diet looks like this:

  • Breakfast should consist of plain tea or coffee and a protein or nutrition drink.
  • Snack: An electrolyte sports drink paired with a vegetable, beef, or chicken broth
  • Lunch:‌ Clear nutrition or protein drink
  • Snack:‌ Fruit-flavored gelatin or Jell-O
  • Dinner:‌ Vegetable, beef or chicken broth

It is crucial to remember that the clear liquid diet prescribed for colonoscopies should only be followed temporarily. According to the Mayo Clinic, you shouldn’t take it for longer than a few days unless your doctor advises you to because, although it contains some carbohydrates for fuel, it is extremely low in protein, essential fats, vitamins, and minerals. Additionally, losing weight with this kind of diet is never a good idea.
