Can I Cook Cabbage Separate From Corned Beef

All About the Brine:

The brine is a heavily salted solution. For added flavor, I also add a bit of sugar, fresh garlic, and a ton of spices to the meat. I use bay leaves, black peppercorns, coriander seeds, and mustard seeds. If the beef brisket you purchase has previously been in a solution, rinse it and only let it sit in the brine for 12 to 24 hours. If the beef brisket you purchase isn’t brined, leave it in the brine for three to five days at the very least. Don’t skip this step because the beef needs time for the salt solution to change its structure and cure it. Otherwise, you will have boiled beef, not “corned beef”.

How to Cook Corned Beef, Cabbage, Potatoes and Carrots Together

The USDA states that you can cook corned beef on the stove, in the oven, or in a slow cooker. For corned beef and vegetables, Chebotar suggests cooking them in a single pot using the following technique.

  • Corned beef brisket
  • Large pot
  • Pickling spice
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Cutting board
  • Chef’s knife
  • Roasting pan
  • Glaze

5. Remove and Serve

  • After three hours, carefully take the vegetable tray and corned beef brisket out of the oven.
  • Allow it to cool.
  • Once it has cooled, move the corned beef to a chopping board and use it to trim the excess fat. Slice the meat into the desired thickness.
  • Serve with cooked vegetables.

How to Make a Hash Out of the Leftovers:

Cut the potatoes and carrots into cubes. Although you can also chop the cabbage into cubes, I like to slice the cabbage and corned beef very thinly.

In a nonstick or cast iron skillet, heat butter or oil. It’s also optional to chop and sauté an onion beforehand. When the butter or oil is hot, add the veggies and beef. Cook until golden brown on one side, then cook on the other until golden brown as well. Continue cooking on medium-high heat until all of the vegetables and the beef are heated through and have reached your desired golden brown color. It tastes amazing when you top it with fresh herbs and a fried egg.
